PSG’s Top Songs and Albums of 2016

Every year, we like to take a look back at all the new music that came out throughout the year. We then go through and weed out the best of the best and compile it in one go-to spot. So what did we find this year?

Without a doubt, this was a huge year for hip-hop. New albums from top dogs Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, J. Cole, Frank Ocean, and Travis Scott definitely made a splash, but so did releases from newcomers like Lil Uzi Vert and Desiigner that took the US by storm. In electronic music, we also saw the rise of RÜFÜS DU SOL here in the states and the triumph of Flume‘s debut album, as well as the success story of our good friends The Chainsmokers as they have risen into one of the biggest artists in the world, regardless of genre.

We break down some of our staff’s top five albums and top five songs of 2016 below. After that, you can find Spotify playlists of all of these selections put together for your listening convenience! (Pro tip: Put the playlists on shuffle for your maximum listening pleasure)

Event Preview: Yellow Claw in Columbus on May 21, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-05-13 at 10.39.22 AM

On May 21, Dutch EDM trio Yellow Claw is gracing Columbus, OH with what is about to be one wild show. Bizzey, Jim Aasgier, and Nizzle – the three that make up Yellow Claw – have become notoriously known for throwing rowdy shows using their trap-infused tracks, and you’re about to see why.

Yellow Claw’s sets are relentlessly heavy, dropping banger after banger. As a result, the energy is brought up to a level that many others can’t reach. It hasn’t been uncommon to see moshing at their shows. (We don’t expect that to be the case on the 21st, however)

We saw Yellow Claw’s Ultra 2015 set a few weeks ago, and it was all the convincing we needed to bring them to Columbus. Although the capital city has played host to some trap and other bass-heavy shows recently, we believe that Yellow Claw is going to show them all up.

Their music is a mix between progressive house with trap-style beats, perfect for a festival setting. You’ll be teased with plenty of build-ups, only to have the bass drop out and the rest of the crowd to lose their minds.

Get pumped and get hydrated before their set, because once Yellow Claw takes the stage, their will be seldom room to take a break.

Tickets for Yellow Claw in Columbus, Ohio on May 21, 2015 are still available – click here to get yours

5 Things We Learned From Madeon’s reddit AMA

madeon live

On March 24, Madeon held a reddit AMA where he fielded questions asked by the general public. They can include everything from questions about music to the most random things you could possibly imagine (100 duck-sized horses, anyone?). We weeded through the AMA to bring you the best 5 things we learned about Madeon.

A Porter Robinson/Madeon collaboration may be in the works (fingers crossed)

Madeon is a huge Beatles fan

There will probably not be a “Pop Culture 2”

Madeon’s inspiration for dabbling into electronic music? Daft Punk.

Madeon’s “Adventure” live tour will feature Madeon tracks with an edgier feel and improvisation. No one live show will ever be the same.

Madeon’s upcoming album “Adventure” comes out on March 31. Catch him live with special guests The M Machine in:

Event Preview: Excision in Columbus, OH on March 26, 2015

excision columbus ohio edm

If you haven’t seen Excision live, you’ve been missing out. Arguably the king of bass music today, he combines his bass-heavy dubstep with a mind-blowing LED display called the Executioner. Tons of programming is put in ahead of time to deliver what is called one of the most unique shows in music today.

On March 26, The Bluestone in Columbus, OH will play host to Excision once again. Anyone who’s been to a past Excision show can vouch for how insane it truly is. You’ll be feeling 150,000 watts of PK Sound rumble through your body while having your face melted by the over-the-top visuals provided by the Executioner set. This is just a preview of what’s in store:

Opening up for Excision is Protohype and Minnesota. Protohype has made a name for himself with his signature “dub-hop” sound, infusing bass music with elements of funk. Minnesota’s preferred style combines hip-hop, Minnesota’s first love, with deep, dark dubstep. Stylistically, both of these tour openers flow smoothly into one another for a very well-rounded show that will have everyone begging for more… if you can handle it all, that is.

So what can you expect when Excision hits the stage at The Bluestone? Expect relentless, unforgiving bass drops hitting you like a truck, shaking all four walls of the venue. For those seeing Excision for the first time, know that it will be LOUD. Like, seriously loud. We highly recommend everyone bring earplugs. Being able to hear the next day is cooler than being the guy who didn’t wear them.

The Executioner set is unlike anything you will have ever seen before; the visuals work seamlessly with the music Excision himself is dropping and will have you left in awe. By the end of it all, you’re going to be exhausted and drained, but you’ll still be wanting more.
