Introducing Ohio State Raised #FEST Artist: Cal Scruby

Ohio has a track record of producing great entertainers, from Katt Williams in comedy to Halle Berry on the big screen. Ohio doesn’t fall short when it comes to introducing new rappers to hip-hop either. Kid Cudi, King Chip (formerly Chip tha Ripper), Machine Gun Kelly and now Cal Scruby.

Cal Scruby is a 25-year-old producer and rapper from Cincinnati, OH who found his talent for rapping in early 2011. His first release, “Best Foot Forward”, was a track recorded and put out by Cal himself, using only Ohio State’s library as a makeshift ‘studio’. It now has over 87,000 plays on YouTube.

Soon after the release of “Best Foot Forward”, Cal began working on another project in September of 2012. The project was “Boy Genius”, with the help of Alexander Dreamer, a 22-year-old producer from Columbus, OH. The project’s first single “SCRUBBY” was featured on BBC Radio1 by Zane Lowe, drawing more attention to Cal and his music. The final project was released in October of 2013, featuring production from not only Alexander Dreamer, but also another Cincinnati native, Mac Niff. The project had a lot of variety and originality to it, and was praised for its cohesiveness. Making these achievements even more impressive is remembering that Cal was still a college student during these projects, doing all of his work alongside his coursework at The Ohio State University.

Finally in August 2014, Cal graduated from OSU and signed to Riveting Entertainment. He moved to Los Angeles to work on his first album House In The Hills which was released in September of 2015. It goes to show even if you manage to get signed by a big time record label and make it from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, things have a way of coming full circle as Cal finds himself performing 3 hours outside of his hometown for #FEST.

One of his best tracks is the Chris Brown supported “Ain’t Shit Change”. Inspiration for the track popped up as a recording session was winding down at 2 a.m. “The engineer and I played one last beat and came up with the hook,” recalls Scruby. “The next day we finished the record.”

“Ain’t Shit Change” is the third single from Scruby’s debut EP House in the Hills released by Riveting Entertainment. The EP bowed at No. 14 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart the week of Sept. 26, 2015. Along with earlier singles “Going Off” featuring Trevor Jackson and “Michael Bay,” the EP also includes guest Sevyn Streeter on the track “Submarine.”

Stream and Download: Cal Scruby – Wondergirl

avatars-000033769228-myrx8y-t500x500Ohio really is home to some noteworthy artists. Last week, talented local Cal Scruby made available “Wondrgirl”, his ode to a heartbreaker and a standout amongst his other tracks. The Alexander Dreamer-produced song begins with a sweetly addictive, piano-reminiscent  synth that exits and reenters the beat for the remainder of the record.

Relatable and cohesively curated, “Wondergirl” will connect with anyone who has underwent romantic tribulations with a partner. Every other line is a quotable one, and every verse contains a moment or two that will have you recalling a similar time in your own life. If not, Cal captures certain memories with such clarity that you’ll feel like you were right there with him.

The instrumental will immediately hook you, but Scruby’s heartfelt lyrics and anger-tinged, rapid flow will ensure that you’ll stay on the line. Stream “Wondergirl” below.

Event Preview: Cincinnati’s UBAHN Festival Takes Place This Weekend Ft Mike Posner & A-Trak

Cincinnati will play host to a very special concert gathering on November 15th and 16th. The unique Ubahn Festival is set to take place in Cincinnati’s abandoned underground transit system, which will surely create an unforgettable experience. Fittingly, the German word “ubahn” translates to “underground transit” in English, and the acts themselves largely hail from hip-hop and EDM’s respective underground scenes. The two stages can be found at the Transit Center, located between Pete Rose Way and 3rd St. Considering the atmosphere and dual-dates of the festival, ticket prices are fortunately affordable.

The lineup features headliners A-Trak and Mike Posner. In addition to the marquee stars, the festival is also proud to host premiere Ohio talent. The Animal Crackers are a Cincinnati-based group of turntable DJ’s who have competed in the DMC World DJ Championships. Cal Scruby is representing Columbus with his quick raps and infectious charisma. With his new mixtape Scruby readily available, this Columbus rapper is ready to spread the word. PSG  has hosted Posner and Scruby. These acts are great assets to any festival lineup.

Ubahn Festival is adding depth to Cincinnati’s already impressive list of such events. The grounds utilize a forgotten portion of the city, while simultaneously attracting a thriving music scene to a larger-scale venue. The festival is sponsored by AGAR, Self Diploma and Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. The venue is unique, the lineup is outstanding and the supporting organizations are impeccable. Whether new to the celebratory experience or a time-tested concert-goer, Ubahn is sure to entertain all who attend.
